WINTER 2025-2026
CHILL OUT WITH AN ORGANIZING PROJECT
I used to dread winter. I hate being cold, dislike being wet and am not a confident driver in dark and stormy weather, all of which makes staying snugly at home very tempting. Staying home can be depressing though, too, so every winter I have to pre-plan activities to keep me safe, sane and as contented as possible. Here are some of my methods:
- Create a list of ideal morning routines that you will look forward to as you count the days to spring. Make your bed, but maybe add a great decorative pillow or an electric blanket or some fresh flannel sheets. Brew a mug of tea but maybe treat yourself with a new type of tea of change it up for hot chocolate once a week. Meditate in the morning but add some special music or learn about some mudras (hand positions) or breath techniques to make it more intentional and effective.
- Take a vacation or a mini break. Twenty-four hours in the city can feel as good as a trip to Paris if you plan it right, and depending on the neighborhood, it’s often warmer than Napa Valley in the winter.
- Plan your meals in advance to prevent unnecessary trips t the store in rainy weather. Make sure to have hot, comfort foods as part of every meal. These don’t have to be decadent–for me a mashed sweet potato is as good as it gets!
- Create a place to de-shoe and boot inside your doorways to cut down on muddy clean up.
- Make sure your winter coats, scarves, gloves and other items are at the ready. Carry some layers in your car along with an extra umbrella.
- Call or e-mail me to distract yourself with some organizing. Every area in your home that you declutter and organize adds to the pleasure and serenity of staying at home in the winter.
